Nilan, who embodied the player type of the Enforcer , celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Canadiens de Montréal by winning the Stanley Cup in 1986 .
Career
Chris Nilan began his career in 1976 on the Northeastern University ice hockey team and spent three years with the National Collegiate Athletic Association . During this time he was selected in the 19th round of the NHL Amateur Draft 1978 in 231st position by the Canadiens de Montréal . He began the 1979/80 season with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs in the American Hockey League and made his NHL debut for the Canadiens in the same season. A year later he was accepted into the professional squad of the Canadiens and became an important player on the team. In the 1983/84 season he made it with the team in the Conference Finals and was defeated there in six games against the New York Islanders .
Two years later he succeeded with the Canadiens after victories over the Boston Bruins , Hartford Whalers and New York Rangers, the entry into the finals of the Stanley Cup . The series against the Calgary Flames was decided in five games in favor of the Canadiens and Nilan won the trophy. In 1987 the division finals were reached, against the Philadelphia Flyers the team only lost after seven games. A year later, Nilan left the Canadiens and joined the New York Rangers. In three years, the qualification for the play-offs was achieved twice, in which the team was eliminated from the competition in the first round. In the summer of 1990 he went to the Boston Bruins and two years later he returned briefly to the Montréal Canadiens to play there in 24 NHL games and then to end his career.
His coaching career, however, was less successful, he began 1995 as an assistant coach with the New Jersey Devils and took over as head coach from 1997 to 1999 the Chesapeake Icebreakers in the East Coast Hockey League . With the Icebreakers he qualified for the play-offs in both years and was eliminated from the competition in the first and third round. In 1998 he was named Head Coach of the Year at ECHL.
