Anton Šťastný (born August 5, 1959 in Bratislava , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Slovak ice hockey player who played for the Québec Nordiques in the National Hockey League from 1980 to 1989 .

Career

He began his career in what was then Czechoslovakia with Slovan CHJZD Bratislava . After a fourth place last year, he won the silver medal with the juniors of his country at the Junior World Championships in Sweden in 1979 . In the same year he was together with his brothers in the senior squad in the world championship and was able to take second place in Moscow . In the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft he was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the twelfth round as 198th. A year later he came back into the draft and was now drawn in the fourth round of the NHL Entry Draft in 1979 by the Québec Nordiques as 83.

The 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid should be an international highlight for him , but after defeats against the USA and Sweden in the preliminary round, all hopes for a medal were gone. After the Olympic Games ended, Anton managed to move to the USA with his brother Peter . Both applied for United States citizenship and joined the Québec Nordiques.

From the 1980/81 season , the Šťastný brothers caused a sensation in the NHL. With 85 points, Anton had a great rookie season. This year he also managed to set a record that is still valid today. In an 11: 7 win at the Washington Capitals , he was able to contribute 8 points (3 goals + 5 assists). In an away game, this was only possible for his brother Peter, who scored four goals and four assists in the same game. A year later, Marian , the oldest brother, came to Quebec. Seven years in a row he reached the playoffs with the Nordiques and was always among the top scorers of the team. After he had only got 37 points in the 1988/89 season and had been used occasionally in the AHL farm team at the Halifax Citadels , he decided to move back to Europe.

He played for three years in Switzerland, first one season with Friborg-Gottéron and then two seasons for EHC Olten . At the end of his career he returned to Slovan Bratislava in the Slovak extra league. In 1994 he ended his career.
