Lü Yue

Lü Yue ( Chinese  呂 樂  /  吕 乐 , Pinyin Lǚ Yuè ; born December 1, 1957 in Tianjin , People's Republic of China ) is a Chinese cameraman and film director .

Life

He studied at the Beijing Film School from 1978 and began his career as a cameraman after graduating. As such, he was first involved in a film in 1984 for Tian Zhuangzhuang's Lie chang zha sha . This was filmed in Mongolia . He then worked with Yim Ho and Huang Shuqin .

Lü became known for his collaboration with director Zhang Yimou . With this together he created the films Life! (1994), Shanghai Serenade (1995) and You hua hao hao shuo (1997). He won several awards for Shanghai Serenade ; such as the New York Film Critics Circle Award and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award . For the same film, he was nominated for " best camera " at the 1996 Academy Awards. In the directorial debut of actress Joan Chen , Tian yu (1998), he not only took over the camera, but also an acting role as the father of the fifteen-year-old main character.

Between 1987 and 1992 he lived partly in France. The French television broadcaster La Sept produced the documentary Nujiang - The Lost Valley in 1987 , his first work as a director. He made his feature film debut in 1998 with Zhao Xiansheng about a teacher who cannot choose between wife and lover. The film was awarded the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival . Mei ren cao (2003), Xiaoshuo (2006) and Shi san ke pao tong (2006) were also created under his direction. Xiaoshuo was featured in the Orizzonti section of the 2007 Venice International Film Festival .
