Brown, who embodied the player-type of an enforcer , celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Edmonton Oilers by winning the Stanley Cup in 1990 . He then tried his hand at coaching, before taking on a higher official position at the Philadelphia Flyers via scouting, for which he has been working again since 2006.

Career

Player career

Brown, who was a notorious enforcer during his career with a height of 1.96 meters , first played in the Western Hockey League for the Spokane Flyers and Saskatoon Blades from 1980 to 1982 . After the Philadelphia Flyers had selected him in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft in the seventh round in 140th position, he signed his first professional contract there before the 1982/83 season . Mainly in the AHL - farm team of the Flyers used the Canadian debut still in his first year as a pro in the National Hockey League . After another season, which he commuted between the farm and professional team, he established himself in the regular Philadelphia squad from the 1984/85 season , which was mainly due to the fact that the Flyers' game system, which was rough and physical at the time, was perfectly tailored to his style of play was. In the 1984/85 and 1986/87 seasons he reached the final series of the Stanley Cup with the team , but both series were lost.

During the 1988/89 season, the management of the Flyers transferred him to his Canadian homeland to the Edmonton Oilers . Brown played there until the summer of 1991 and won the Stanley Cup with the team in 1990 .

After a transfer before the 1991/92 season , the Canadian returned to the Flyers in Philadelphia. With him, the Finn Jari Kurri and Corey Foster moved to the east coast. On the other hand, Scott Mellanby , Craig Berube and Craig Fisher had to make their way to Edmonton. Brown stayed in Philadelphia for another four seasons before signing a contract with the San Jose Sharks as a free agent in August 1995 . At the end of the 1995/96 season , the Canadian ended his career after 729 NHL games, in which he collected 97 points and 1789 penalty minutes.

Trainer and functionary career

After retiring from the San Jose Sharks, Brown returned to the Philadelphia Flyers and served as assistant coach to head coaches Terry Murray , Wayne Cashman and Roger Neilson for two years between 1996 and 1998 . For the 1998/99 season he moved within the league to the New York Rangers in their scouting department. There Brown was employed as a scout for five years before he was promoted to Director of Professional Scouting . He held this post until the summer of 2006.

At the beginning of the 2006/07 season , the Canadian was again employed by the Flyers. Initially until 2013 as Director of Player Personnel , since then - as in New York - as Director of Professional Scouting .
