Career

Cashman in the jersey of the Boston Bruins

During his junior years Cashman played with Bobby Orr for the Oshawa Generals in the Ontario Hockey Association . The Generals were a youth team sponsored by the Boston Bruins . Due to numerous injuries he was brought to the Bruins for a game at the age of 19 in the 1964/65 season .

In 1966, the Bruins sent him to their farm team, the Oklahoma City Blazers , in the Central Professional Hockey League . In the 1967/68 season he came to twelve missions in the NHL. The following year he started the season on the farm team. This time it was the Hershey Bears in the American Hockey League . He soon returned to the Bruins and finally prevailed in the NHL.

Together with Phil Esposito and Ken Hodge , he was in the first row of the Bruins. Here he was neither a runner nor a technically above average player, the enormous commitment and skill in the game in the corners of the attack zone of the opponent made him such a valuable player. With the Bruins he won his first Stanley Cup in the 1969/70 season . Two years later, he and his team were able to repeat this success. He was also in the squad of the NHL selection, which could win at the Summit Series in 1972 against the Soviet Union . He himself contributed two templates to his two missions. He had his best season personally in the 1973/74 season . In the scorer list of the NHL he was behind his teammates Esposito, Orr and Hodge in fourth place. That season he was also on the ice in the NHL All-Star Game .

After returning to the squad in 1977 after a major operation, he became team captain of the Bruins for six years . As the last player who had already played a game in the time of the " Original Six " , he ended his career as a player after the 1982/83 season .

His former teammate Phil Esposito, who worked as a coach and general manager at New York Rangers in 1986 , brought him to his staff as a scout . From the 1987/88 season he worked as assistant coach for the Rangers for five years. This was followed by four years as an assistant to Terry Crisp at the Tampa Bay Lightning , before he was behind the gang of the San Jose Sharks as an assistant to Al Sims . As head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers he went into the 1997/98 season , but resigned after 61 games in the second tier and, as with the Rangers, was assistant to Roger Neilson . With Neilson he left the Flyers and became the head coach of the Pensacola Ice Pilots in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). After a year he returned to the NHL. His former team, the Boston Bruins, took him on as an assistant coach. With interruptions he worked there until 2006.
