In 2006 he went to the top Hungarian club SC Szeged , where he could not find his way around, so that after only two months he moved to the CB Ciudad de Logroño in the Spanish ASOBAL league . For the 2006/07 season he moved to league competitor SD Teucro before signing a contract with the Croatian series champion RK Zagreb in 2008. From 2011 he ran for the German second division TSG Friesenheim . In October 2012 Backovič contracted a ruptured Achilles tendon, which caused him to be out for much of the 2012/13 season. In the 2013/14 season he ran for HG Saarlouis.
Ognjen Backovič has so far played 118 international matches for the Slovenian national team. At the 2004 European Championships in his own country, he became vice European champion.
