Daniel Armand Daoust (* 29. February 1960 in Montreal , Quebec ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player and - coaches , who during his playing career from 1977 to 1997 among other 554 games for the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League on the position of the center . He also spent much of his career in Switzerland, where he mainly in the National League B was active.
Career
Daoust spent his junior years between 1977 and 1980 with the Cornwall Royals in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . Although the striker in his second and third year reached the mark of 40 goals, he remained in the NHL Entry Draft due to its small size and weight of the franchises of the National Hockey League unnoticed. With the Royals, he won both the Coupe du Président of the LHJMQ and the Memorial Cup in 1980, before moving to the professional field in the summer of 1980.
The attacker signed a contract with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs from the American Hockey League , for which he collected 98 scorer points in his rookie season and was elected to the AHL First All-Star Team . The win of the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award was denied to him, however, because Pelle Lindbergh won it. Instead, Daoust received a contract from the Canadiens de Montréal from the NHL because of his services . This left him in the following year with the Voyageurs before he made his debut for the Canadiens at the beginning of the 1982/83 season . Daoust's time in his hometown came to an end after four missions in December 1982 when he was given to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a third-round vote in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft .
For the Maple Leafs, Daoust went on the ice for the next seven and a half seasons until the summer of 1990. In his first year he scored 52 points - including one for Montréal - and was called up to the NHL All-Rookie Team . In the following two years, the French-Canadian was able to prove his qualities with 74 and 54 scorer points. With the beginning of the 1985/86 season , however, his point yield dropped drastically and by the end of the 1989/90 season he only reached the 20-point mark once and never more than nine goals.
After the striker's contract was not renewed in the summer of 1990, he ventured a fresh start in Europe . He moved to Switzerland and went there in the 1990/91 season for HC Ajoie in the National League B on the ice. With 67 points in 37 games, he found his lost qualities as a goal scorer and preparer again. This was followed by a season with league competitor SC Lyss , in which he also played for EHC Biel in National League A and ESV Kaufbeuren in the ice hockey Bundesliga . From the game year 1992/93 Daoust found a new sporting home in HC Thurgau from the NLB. He ran for a total of five years for the club from Weinfelden , whose top scorer he was in the first four seasons. He also won the prestigious Spengler Cup with Team Canada in 1995 . After the 1996/97 season , Daoust finally retired from active sport at the age of 37.
As a result, Daoust took for the 1997/98 season the assistant coach position with the Hamilton Bulldogs from the AHL, where he worked under head coach Lorne Molleken . This engagement ended after one season, as Molleken moved to the Chicago Blackhawks and the coaching team was then completely replaced. After that, Daoust was only sporadically behind the gang as a junior coach.
