Alfons Balmann

Alfons Balmann (born 1963 in Holte (now Lähden ) in the Emsland ) is a German agricultural economist . He is director and department head at the Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Development in Transformation Economies (IAMO) and professor for operational and structural development in rural areas in the field of economics and social sciences in agriculture at the University of Halle-Wittenberg . He is also active in political consulting.

Life

Alfons Balmann grew up in Emsland and, after graduating from high school in St. Ursula Haselünne , studied physics in Hanover in 1982 and, from 1983, agricultural economics at the University of Göttingen . He received his doctorate there in 1994 and then moved to the Humboldt University in Berlin , where he worked as a research assistant. In 2000 he received his habilitation there and then took on substitute professorships at the University of Neubrandenburg and the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg . In 2003 he was offered a professorship in Halle as part of a joint appointment by the university and IAMO. Today he is director and department head at IAMO.

Balmann's work focuses on research on the change in agricultural structures, the effects of agricultural policies, the role of the land market and the emergence of large agricultural groups, so-called agroholdings.

Balmann is u. a. Member of the Scientific Advisory Council for Agricultural Policy, Nutrition and Consumer Health Protection of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture , Chairman of the Society for Economic and Social Sciences in Agriculture (GEWISOLA), as well as the Committee for Development of Rural Areas of the German Agricultural Society (DLG). He is also a member of the board of directors of IMC SA (based in Luxembourg), which is active in Ukraine.
