List of countries by maternal mortality rate
Maternal mortality is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as “the death of a woman during pregnancy or 42 days after the end of pregnancy, regardless of the length of the pregnancy or the place where it takes place or the measures that have been taken in relation to her not if the deaths are due to chance or failure ”. The maternal mortality rate, on the other hand, is the number of maternal deaths per 100,000 births. The maternal mortality rate is used as a criterion for the quality of obstetrics and medical care in a country.

Development of the maternal mortality rate 1990–2015
The following table shows the development of the maternal mortality rate per 100,000 births in various regions of the world. The United Nations Millennium Development Goals planned to reduce maternal mortality by two thirds between 1990 and 2015. Despite significant progress in reducing maternal mortality, this goal has not been achieved.
