The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1933 began on March 25, 1933 and ended on April 13, 1933 with the New York Rangers 3-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs . The Rangers won their second title after 1928 and also provided Cecil Dillon, the top scorer and top scorer of these playoffs. The final also marked the re- edition from the previous year , in which the Maple Leafs prevailed 3-0. Meanwhile, the 1933 playoffs saw the longest playoff game in league history at the time , so the decisive fifth game of the semi-final series between Toronto and the Boston Bruins ended after 164 minutes and 46 seconds with a goal by Ken Doraty in sixth overtime . However, this record only lasted three years, as the playing time was exceeded by around 12 minutes in 1936 and has remained the record to this day.
mode
The three best teams from each division qualified for the playoffs. The two division winners played one of the two finalists directly in a first semi-final. The four remaining teams faced each other in two quarter-finals, with the two division runners-up and the two division thirds clashing. The quarter-finals finally culminated in the second semi-final, which determined the second finalist. The first semi-final and the Stanley Cup final were played in the best-of-five mode , while the second semi-final series and the two quarter-final series basically played two games. In these only the goal difference to advance was taken into account, so that a draw was also possible.
In series with best-of-five mode, the lower-seeded team had home rights in the first two games before the higher-seeded team played three home games in a row. In series with only two games, each team hosted a home game. It should be noted, however, that there were regular deviations from the distribution of home rights presented for various reasons.
Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) . The quarter-finals and the second semi-finals were excluded from this regulation, all of which could end in a draw and only went into overtime if the goal difference at the end of the second game had not produced a winner.
