The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1965 began on April 1, 1965 and ended on May 1, 1965 with the 4-3 win of the Canadiens de Montréal against the Chicago Black Hawks . The Canadiens won their 13th title in franchise history and also ended the Toronto Maple Leafs series , which had previously been successful three times in a row. In addition, with this 13th success - against the twelve Stanley Cups of the Maple Leafs - Montréal became the sole and still reigning record winner of the trophy. In addition, they provided the first winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy in the person of captain Jean Béliveau , which henceforth honors the Most Valuable Player of the Playoffs. The defeated Black Hawks, on the other hand, had Bobby Hull, the top scorer and top scorer of this post-season in their ranks.

For only the second time in the league's history (after 1955 ), all matches in the Stanley Cup final were decided with home wins, which only happened again in 2003 .

mode

The four best teams in the league qualified for the playoffs. In the semi-finals, the first and third as well as the second and fourth of the final table faced each other. The respective winners then contested the Stanley Cup final.

All series were held in best-of-seven mode , which means that a team needed four wins to advance. The higher seeded team had home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games.

Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
