The playoffs for the Stanley Cup the year 1994 began on 16 April 1994 and ended on 14 June 1994 with a 4: 3 win the New York Rangers against the Vancouver Canucks . For the Rangers, a 54-year-long dry spell, already known as the “ Curse of 1940 ”, ended with the fourth Stanley Cup victory in franchise history , making it their tenth final and their first final since 1979 disputed. In addition, they put defender Brian Leetch the top scorer and the Conn Smythe Trophy awarded Most Valuable Player of the post-season , making Leetch the first American ever to be honored with this award. The Vancouver Canucks, however, were in their second Stanley Cup final after 1982, where they lost 4-0 to the New York Islanders .

mode

After the two division winners from each conference as well as the six other teams with the highest points in the conference have qualified, the playoffs , which are held in the knockout system , start . The division winner with the best points meets the eighth and thus the worst qualified team, number 2 of this ranking list meets number 7, etc. This mode allows one or more qualified teams to have more points than one of the division winners. The same principle is used to determine the matches in the second playoff round.

Each conference then plays its winner in the conference quarter-finals, conference semifinals and conference finals, who then compete in the final for the Stanley Cup . All series in each round are played in best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Eastern Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Western Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

In the case of games that remain a draw after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows . It ends with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .

Stanley Cup winner

The Stanley Cup winner New York Rangers traditionally had a total of 44 people, including 25 players and some officials, including the coaching staff and management, engraved on the base of the trophy. Among these was the assistant to general manager Larry Pleau , who had won the Avco World Trophy as a player in the World Hockey Association . The rule for the players is that they should either have played 41 games for the team in the regular season or one game in the final series. But there are always exceptions. The Rangers wanted to use this for Mike Hartman and Ed Olczyk. After both names were not engraved, the Rangers protested. Both names were then engraved on the underside of the cup.

The 25 players in the Rangers consist of two goalkeepers, seven defenders and 16 attackers, including five Europeans . Alexander Karpowzew, Sergei Subow, Alexei Kowaljow and Sergei Nemtschinow were the first Russians to be immortalized at the Stanley Cup. In the previous four years there was a Russian player in the Stanley Cup winner's squad three times due to insufficient number of games, but their names were never included. Jokingly, the Rangers were also called Edmonton Oilers East at the time, because with Mark Messier, Kevin Lowe, Glenn Anderson, Jeff Beukeboom, Adam Graves, Craig MacTavish and Esa Tikkanen, there were seven players in the squad who had already won the Stanley Cup with the Oilers had. Mark Messier was the first player to win the Stanley Cup as team captain with two different teams. After Wayne Gretzky left, he was captain of the Oilers in 1990.
