James Paul "Jamie" Baker (born August 31, 1966 in Nepean , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 429 games for the Nordiques de Québec , Ottawa Senators , San Jose Sharks and in the course of his active career between 1985 and 1999 Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League on the position of the center .
Career
After two years with his home team, the Nepean Raiders, Jamie Baker went to St. Lawrence University , where he had four successful years with the college's ice hockey team. From the Nordiques de Québec , he was selected eighth in the 1988 NHL Supplemental Draft and joined the organization of the NHL team in the fall of 1989.
For three years commuted Baker between the Nordiques and the Halifax Citadel , the AHL - farm team of the franchise , a fixed place in the NHL squad jumped for him but in the end not get out. In 1992 he signed a contract with the newly formed Ottawa Senators . As expected, the season was anything but good for the new team and only ten out of 84 games could be won. Baker was still one of the highlights of the team, was the second best scorer of the Senators and achieved a career best with 48 points.
In September 1993 the San Jose Sharks signed him, for which he played three years. His winning goal in the seventh game against the highly favored Detroit Red Wings in the first round of the 1994 playoffs , which meant the move into the second round, was particularly remembered .
In the summer of 1996 he was transferred to the Toronto Maple Leafs . There he played in the NHL in 1996/97 , but the following year he mainly only played for the AHL farm team Chicago Wolves , with whom he won the Turner Cup . Shortly before the start of the 1998/99 season , he returned to San Jose and completed the season opening game with the team in Japan. That was his only appearance that season for the Sharks and also his last in the NHL. During the season he switched to the Finnish SM-liiga for HIFK Helsinki and ended his career after the season. Baker was a good defensive striker who showed his qualities especially in close games.
In 2005 he returned to San Jose and has since worked as an expert on radio broadcasts for the Sharks' games. At the beginning of the 2006/07 season he ran the popular TV show Shark Byte for a few times , which has background reports and stories about the San Jose Sharks as content.
