Nick Kypreos (born June 4, 1966 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player and current television presenter. The left winger played between 1989 and 1997, among other things, over 400 games for the Washington Capitals , Hartford Whalers , New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League . In 1994 he won the Stanley Cup with the Rangers .

Career

Beginnings

Nick Kypreos was born the son of Greek immigrants in Toronto, where he began playing ice hockey and played in regional junior leagues for the North York Civics, among others . In 1983 he was selected in 56th position by the Kitchener Rangers in the Priority Selection of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the highest junior division in his home province. After only four games in Kitchener, however, the attacker was given up within the league to the North Bay Centennials , with whom he spent the rest of his junior career. He established himself as a regular scorer, so he came in the 1986/87 season on 90 scorer points in 46 games, while he reached the playoff final for the J. Ross Robertson Cup with the Centennials and failed there, however, to the Oshawa Generals .

Although he was called during this time once to the First All-Star Team and once to the Second All-Star Team of the league, he was not included in all NHL Entry Drafts , so he joined the Philadelphia Flyers as a free agent . They used the winger from now on with their farm team , the Hershey Bears , in the American Hockey League (AHL). Kypreos spent just under two and a half years in Hershey, where he won the AHL playoffs for the Calder Cup with the Bears in 1988 , before joining the Washington Capitals in October 1989 via the NHL Waiver Draft .

NHL

In the jersey of the Capitals he made his debut in the National Hockey League (NHL) a few days later and subsequently established himself in their squad, apart from a few AHL appearances for the Baltimore Skipjacks . Meanwhile, he did not succeed in transferring his offensive qualities shown in the junior area to the NHL, so that he was primarily used as an enforcer throughout his career . In Washington, Kypreos was active three seasons before he was given in June 1992 in exchange for Mark Hunter to the Hartford Whalers . In his first year in Hartford he reached his career best with 27 points scorer, while he led the Whalers with 325 penalty minutes and in this regard placed fourth in the league.

As early as November 1993, the Whalers sent him along with Steve Larmer , Barry Richter and a six- round suffrage in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft to the New York Rangers , who in return gave Darren Turcotte and James Patrick . In this 1993/94 season, the winger won the Stanley Cup with the Rangers , but was used in only three playoff games. In February 1996, the Rangers transferred him in exchange for Bill Berg to the Toronto Maple Leafs , where he was active until the end of the 1996/97 season. In September 1997 Kypreos suffered under a Preseason -Spiels in a fist fight with Ryan Vandenbussche a concussion that with him in a postkommotielles syndrome resulted and eventually forced him to end his career. In total, he had completed 476 NHL games and collected 94 points and 1275 penalty minutes.

Since then, Kypreos has worked as a TV presenter and analyst, in particular for Sportsnet and for CBC as part of Hockey Night in Canada .
