Grant Stuart Ledyard (born November 19, 1961 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player , coach and official who played 1111 games for the New York Rangers , Los Angeles Kings , Washington during his active career between 1979 and 2004 Capitals , Buffalo Sabers , Dallas Stars , Vancouver Canucks , Boston Bruins , Ottawa Senators and Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Ledyard celebrated his greatest career success in the jersey of the Canadian national team by winning medals at the world championships in 1985 and 1986 .

Career

Ledyard played in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League and Western Hockey League during his junior years between 1979 and 1982 . Since the defender was not drafted , the New York Rangers from the National Hockey League secured the services of Ledyard in the summer of 1982 and initially used him in the Central Hockey League with the Tulsa Oilers , with whom he won the league championship in 1984 could.

For the 1984/85 season Ledyard finally rose to the NHL roster of Rangers, but also spent parts of the season in the American Hockey League with the New Haven Nighthawks . For the season 1985/86 the Canadian established himself in the squad of the Broadway Blueshirts , but was given up to the Los Angeles Kings in December 1985 together with goalkeeper Roland Melanson . These received in return a four-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 1987 and Brian MacLellan . Further transfers to the Washington Capitals and Buffalo Sabers followed by March 1989 . The defender remained loyal to the Sabers until the end of the 1992/93 season . He then moved to the Dallas Stars as a free agent for four years . With the beginning of the 1997/98 season , numerous brief engagements with the Vancouver Canucks , Boston Bruins and Ottawa Senators followed , which he left after the 1999/2000 season.

It then lasted until January 2001, before Ledyard found a new employer in the Tampa Bay Lightning . For the Florida franchise , the Canadian only ran 14 times because the Lightning gave him to the Dallas Stars for the rest of the season. From there he returned as a free agent for the 2001/02 season. After the season he announced the end of his playing career, but played sporadically in the Ontario Hockey Association for the next two years .

From 2005 Ledyard pursued a career as a coach and functionary. Between 2005 and 2007 he initially worked as an assistant coach at Canisius College , followed by a two-year stint as head coach of the Buffalo Junior Sabers in the Ontario Junior Hockey League . In the 2009/10 season , the Canadian was Director of Player Development for his ex-team Buffalo Sabers.

International

Ledyard represented his home country at the 1985 and 1986 World Championships . He won a silver medal in 1985 and a bronze medal in 1986. In total, he played 13 games for the Canadian national team , in which he posted three assists and ten penalty minutes. In addition, he took part in the Spengler Cup 2000 with Team Canada .
