Stéphane Matteau (born September 2, 1969 in Rouyn-Noranda , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach who played between and among others 957 games for the Calgary Flames , Chicago Blackhawks , New York Rangers , St. Louis Blues , San Jose Sharks and Florida Panthers played in the National Hockey League on the left winger position . Matteau celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the New York Rangers when he won the Stanley Cup in 1994 . His son Stefan is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Matteau first played for four years from 1985 to 1989 in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec with the Olympiques de Hull , with whom he twice won the Coupe du Président , the championship title of the LHJMQ. As a result, he also took part in the Memorial Cup twice.
After the Calgary Flames had selected him in the NHL Entry Draft 1987 in the second round in 25th place, they used him in the 1988/89 season in the International Hockey League . So also in the following year. For the 1990/91 season , the French-Canadian was an integral part of the Calgary Flames, which kept him busy until December 1991. During a toe injury that let him play only 24 games in the 1991/92 season , the Flames transferred him to Trent Yawney for the Chicago Blackhawks , where Matteau played until March 1994. The Blackhawks sent him together with Brian Noonan for Tony Amonte to the New York Rangers , with whom he won the trophy of the same name at the end of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1994 . Matteau played a major role in this after scoring two goals in overtime in the Eastern Conference final against the New Jersey Devils . The left winger remained with the Rangers until the 1995/96 season before he was given to the St. Louis Blues for Ian Laperrière . There he played until the end of the 1996/97 game year .
In the summer of 1997 Matteau moved to the San Jose Sharks for Darren Turcotte , where he stayed for a total of five seasons and supported the young team with his experience. After his contract expired after the 2001/02 season , he signed as a free agent with the Florida Panthers , where he met his old coach from Chicago, Mike Keenan . After the season he officially ended his career on July 29, 2003. Matteau played a total of 13 seasons in the NHL in his career. With the exception of his last season with the Florida Panthers, he managed each year with the respective team to qualify for the playoffs.
After the end of his active career, Matteau worked between 2011 and 2013 as assistant coach of the Armada de Blainville-Boisbriand in the LHJMQ.
