The playoffs for the Stanley Cup in 1982 began on April 7, 1982 and ended on May 16, 1982 with the New York Islanders' 4-0 victory over the Vancouver Canucks . The Islanders won their third Stanley Cup in a row in their third finals and were therefore the first and so far only US team that could win more than two consecutive titles; Moreover, this was achieved by them at all any other team more, while in the year thereafter still nachlegten a fourth success. They also provided with Bryan Trottier the top scorer and with Mike Bossy leading scorer and also with the Conn Smythe Trophy winning Most Valuable Player of this post-season . The defeated Vancouver Canucks, however, played their first Stanley Cup final in franchise history .

The 1982 playoffs were accompanied by a major change in their format, so the league management returned to a more strictly divided into divisions and conferences mode.

mode

After the four teams with the best points from each division have qualified, the playoffs , which are held in the knockout system , start . The respective first meets the fourth and the second meets the third of each division, so that the division winners are played out in the first two rounds. These then compete in the conference finals for entry into the Stanley Cup finals.

The series of the first round are played in the best-of-five mode, the series of all subsequent rounds in the best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to progress from the second round; in the first round three. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Prince of Wales Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Campbell Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

In the case of games that remain a draw after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows . It ends with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
