David E. "Dave" Lumley (born September 1, 1954 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The right winger played over 400 games for the Canadiens de Montréal , Edmonton Oilers and Hartford Whalers in the National Hockey League between 1979 and 1987 . He spent most of this time with the Oilers, with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 1984 and 1985 .
Career
Dave Lumley was not active in his youth in the Ontario Hockey League , the highest junior league in his home province, but enrolled in 1973 at the University of New Hampshire . With their ice hockey team, the Wildcats , he took part in the game operations of the ECAC , a league of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . Even as a freshman , he achieved a point average of over 1.0 per game with 31 scorer points from 31 games and was subsequently considered in the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft in 199th position by the Canadiens de Montréal . For the time being, however, the winger ran for another three seasons in New Hampshire, increasing his personal statistics from year to year to 60 points in the 1976/77 season.
For the 1977/78 season Lumley moved to the organization of the Canadiens, but could not prevail there in the following two years. Apart from three appearances in the National Hockey League (NHL), he was only on the ice with the Canadiens' farm team , the Nova Scotia Voyageurs , in the American Hockey League (AHL). There he confirmed his skills as a scorer, so he posted 80 points in the 1978/79 season and was consequently elected to the AHL Second All-Star Team . Finally, the Canadiens gave him in June 1979, along with Dan Newman, to the Edmonton Oilers and in return received a second-round vote for the 1979 NHL Entry Draft .
With the Oilers, the attacker quickly established himself in the NHL line-up and scored 58 points in 80 games in his first full NHL season. This strong debut was followed by only 16 points from 53 games in the subsequent 1980/81 season, which was due, among other things, to the arrival of the two future Hall of Fame members Jari Kurri and Glenn Anderson . The two wingers were undoubtedly more talented than Lumley offensively, so that he was increasingly entrusted with defensive tasks and physical play in the back attack rows. This in turn changed in the following year 1981/82, when Lumley was regularly at the side of Wayne Gretzky on the ice and was able to score 32 goals in 66 games and book 42 assists. Thus he reached his career best with 74 points in the NHL, while he scored over 1.0 points per game for the only time in his NHL career. In addition, he received special media attention this season, as he scored at least one goal in twelve consecutive games between November and December 1981. He missed the modern NHL record by Charlie Simmer of the season 1979/80 at a game while his total is the fifth longest series of this kind succeeded (together with Cy Denneny , 1917-18).
Lumley's offensive stats fell again in the following years, but he won the first Stanley Cup in franchise history with the team in the 1984 playoffs . In the final against the New York Islanders , against whom the Oilers had to accept a final defeat last year , the Canadian scored the last goal in the Empty Net to make it 5-2 in the fifth and final game of the series. At the beginning of the following season 1984/85 Lumley was signed by the Hartford Whalers via the waiver , but returned in February 1985 in the same way to Edmonton, so that he could celebrate the second title in a row with the Oilers in the 1985 playoffs . After another year, he officially announced the end of his active career in November 1986. Lumley had played a total of 498 NHL games and scored 272 points scorer. In 2003 he was part of the selection of the Oilers who participated in the NHL Heritage Classic .
