John A. Tonelli (born March 23, 1957 in Hamilton , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The left winger began his career in the World Hockey Association , where he played for the Houston Eros between 1975 and 1978 . He then moved to the National Hockey League , in which he should play over 1000 games for a total of five teams by 1992. He spent most of it with the New York Islanders , with whom he won the Stanley Cup four times in a row in the early 1980s and where his jersey number 27 has not been awarded since February 2020 . With the Canadian national ice hockey team Tonelli won the gold medal at the Canada Cup 1984 .
Career
During his junior years he played for the Toronto Marlboros in the OHA . The World Hockey Association had its sights set on a number of junior players. While the NHL was only allowed to draft at the age of 20, the WHA also tried to lure younger players. Tonelli's commitment was particularly in the public eye. He played with the juniors until his 18th birthday and then signed with the Houston Eros . In court it was decided that his behavior was lawful as he could enter into this new contract as an adult.
In the Eros he played in a row with Gordie Howe and his son Marty . In the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft , the New York Islanders secured the rights to him for the National Hockey League (NHL) in the second round in 33rd place . After the Eros were broken up, he played in New York from the 1978/79 season . At first he was a player with a focus on combat who could take the puck from his opponent, only later did he develop into a strong scorer. With the Islanders, he won the Stanley Cup four times in a row . At the 1984 Canada Cup , he was the tournament's outstanding player. Motivated by this, he scored 100 points in the 1984/85 season .
Towards the end of the following season he moved to the Calgary Flames . In the two and a half seasons in Calgary he was unable to match the values in New York. From the 1988/89 season he played with Wayne Gretzky for the Los Angeles Kings . After two decent years, it dropped to just 30 points in the third year. He moved to the Chicago Blackhawks , who passed him on to the Nordiques de Québec during the season . There he ended the season and his active career.
In February 2020 , the New York Islanders blocked his jersey number 27, which will no longer be awarded. Anders Lee , team captain of the Isles at this time, was allowed to wear this shirt number in consultation with Tonelli.
