Marty Gordon Howe (born February 18, 1954 in Detroit , Michigan ) is a former American ice hockey player (defender) who played for the Hartford Whalers and Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League as well as the Houston Eros and New England Whalers from 1973 to 1985 played in the World Hockey Association .
Career
The sons of "Mr Hockey" Gordie Howe have always been a major focus of attention . From 1971 Marty, the eldest son, played as a junior with the Toronto Marlboros in the OHA . A year later, his younger brother Mark also joined them. Together they won the Memorial Cup there in 1973 .
For the 1973/74 season , the Houston Eros announced a spectacular new addition to the World Hockey Association with Gordie Howe and, as an encore, his two sons Mark and Marty were also committed. Together they won the AVCO World Trophy as champions of the WHA in their first two seasons in 1974 and 1975 . In the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft , the Montréal Canadiens secured the rights to him in the third round as 51st. But Marty stayed with his family in the WHA. Nothing changed when the Detroit Red Wings , his father's old team, took the rights to him from Montreal in 1977. Also in 1977 he was elected to the All-Star Team in the WHA. For the 1977/78 season he moved with father and brother to the New England Whalers . The team was renamed with admission to the NHL for the 1979/80 season in Hartford Whalers and so the three Howes came to joint missions in the NHL, with Marty, who of all in his family always looked at things as relaxed as possible, this season spent most of the AHL with the Springfield Indians and was only allowed to play six games in the NHL. After this season, his father finally ended his playing career. While his brother Mark became one of the top defenders in the NHL, Marty was mostly used with the Binghamton Whalers in the AHL. For the 1982/83 season he moved to the Boston Bruins . A year later he played again in Hartford. After the 1984/85 season , he ended his NHL career.
In 1992 he took over the Flint Bulldogs in the Colonial Hockey League as a coach and went on the ice again for three games. The following year he and the team moved to Utica. From 2000 to 2006 he was an assistant coach with the Chicago Wolves .
