Career
McRae began his professional career in adolescence with the London Knights , for whom he was on the ice from 1978 to 1981. During this time he was selected in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft in the fifth round at position 87 of the Québec Nordiques . During the 1981/82 season he came to his first appearances in the National Hockey League and scored seven points in 20 games. McRae was also used in the NHL the following season, but most of the season he spent with Fredericton Express in the American Hockey League . On August 12, 1983, he was transferred to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Richard Turmel . There he came in the following two seasons on only four pointless missions in the NHL, while he was one of the regulars with the St. Catharines Saints in the AHL.
In July 1985, he signed a contract with the Detroit Red Wings as a free agent . In the 1985/86 season , however, he mostly played in the farm team, the Adirondack Red Wings , where he appeared regularly as a scorer and collected 360 penalty minutes in 86 games. He also won the Calder Cup with Adirondack that season . In January 1987 he was transferred back to the Nordiques, of whom he had been selected in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft. McRae stayed in Quebec for only about six months and then signed a contract with the Minnesota North Stars . There he became a crowd favorite and fulfilled his duties as an enforcer , four seasons in a row he was in the penalty box for over 300 minutes. In the 1992 NHL Expansion Draft , he was selected from the newly formed Tampa Bay Lightning franchise .
After 14 games, his engagement was over and McRae was handed over to the St. Louis Blues . After more than three moderate years, his expiring contract was not extended. In October 1996, McRae decided to continue his career with the Chicago Blackhawks , for which he completed eight NHL games and then ended his active career.
