history

The St. Catharines Saints were founded in 1982 by the Toronto Maple Leafs as their new farm team as a franchise of the American Hockey League . After the team missed the playoffs in their first season, the Saints reached the playoffs for the Calder Cup for the first time in franchise history in the 1983/84 season , but were defeated there in the first round by the Rochester Americans 3: 4 wins . Another year followed without the Saints participating in the playoffs before St. Catharines failed in the 1985/86 season only in the second playoff round with a 3: 4 win at the Hershey Bears .

Following this season, the Toronto Maple Leafs decided to relocate their farm team to Newmarket (Ontario) , where it was henceforth active in the AHL under the name Newmarket Saints .
