The Boston Braves were an American ice hockey franchise of the American Hockey League based in Boston , Massachusetts . The Braves' venue was the Boston Garden .

history

The Boston Braves were founded in 1971 as a franchise of the American Hockey League , in which they were active for the following three years. The franchise came about because the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League wanted a farm team in the same city and in the same arena as the Boston Garden due to the rising popularity of ice hockey in New England . In their first season in the AHL, the Braves reached the playoffs as winners of the East Division in the 1971/72 season, in which they failed only in the second round 4-0 to the Nova Scotia Voyageurs . In the next year, the Braves again reached the second playoff round, in which they were subject to the Nova Scotia Voyageurs in a sweep for the second time .

After the Boston Braves had missed the playoffs for the Calder Cup for the first time in the 1974/75 season and the audience numbers dropped significantly due to the waning of the hockey boom in New England, the Boston Bruins left their farm team inactive and found a new one in the Rochester Americans Cooperation partner. Although the Bruins had a new farm team, the Boston Braves left the Boston Braves inactive until 1987 when they sold the rights to the franchise to the Winnipeg Jets , who relocated it to Moncton , New Brunswick , where it operated in the AHL under the Moncton Hawks name .
