history

The Indianapolis Capitals were founded in 1939 as a franchise of the American Hockey League and were a farm team of the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League . Already in their third season in the AHL Indianapolis reached the final of the Calder Cup , in which it prevailed with 3-2 victories against the Hershey Bears . A year later, the team moved into the finals again, but this time failed because of the Buffalo Bisons with a sweep in the best-of-five series. In the following six seasons, the Capitals either did not reach the playoffs or were eliminated in the first round before they beat the Cleveland Barons 4-0 in the 1949/50 season . After Indianapolis had missed the playoffs once in the following two years or was eliminated in the first round, the franchise was dissolved in 1952 after thirteen years in the AHL.
