Joe Turner (born March 28, 1919 in Windsor , Ontario ; † January 12, 1945 in the Netherlands ) was a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who played for the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League during his playing days .

Career

Joe Turner received a contract with the Indianapolis Capitals from the American Hockey League in 1941 , having previously been active in amateur hockey since 1933. In his first and only season in professional ice hockey, the goalkeeper and his team won the Calder Cup as a regular player and was elected to the AHL's First All-Star Team . On January 5, 1942 he also made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Detroit Red Wings in a 3-3 draw against the Toronto Maple Leafs , where he replaced the injured goalkeeper Johnny Mowers . Following this season, the Canadian joined the US Army and fell on January 12, 1945 in the Netherlands . The Turner Cup was named after him, which was presented to the winner of the International Hockey League from 1945 to 2001 and to the winner of a league of the same name from 2007 to 2010 .
