The playoffs for the Stanley Cup the year 1988 began on April 6, 1988 and ended on 26 May 1988 with a 4: 0 win the Edmonton Oilers over the Boston Bruins . The Oilers thus won their fourth title in the last five years and presented with their captain Wayne Gretzky also with the Conn Smythe Trophy winning Most Valuable Player of this post-season . Gretzky became the third player after Bernie Parent and Bobby Orr to receive this honor twice (for the first time in 1985). In addition, "The Great One" led the list of scorer in the playoffs and set a record in the Stanley Cup playoffs that is still valid today with 31 assists (status: playoffs 2019). The only two defeats that the Oilers suffered from 16 victories required to win the Stanley Cup are also unmatched to this day. The last time this succeeded in 1977 was the Canadiens de Montréal , although twelve wins were enough to win the title. The Boston Bruins, on the other hand, suffered their fourth consecutive defeat in the final, most recently they were defeated by the Canadiens de Montréal in 1978 (2-4).

For the first time since 1978 that reached franchise the Colorado Rockies / New Jersey Devils the playoffs again, so that the longest at that time series of nine seasons without playoff participation ended.

mode

After the four teams with the best points from each division have qualified, the playoffs , which are held in the knockout system , start . The respective first meets the fourth and the second meets the third of each division, so that the division winners are played out in the first two rounds. These then compete in the conference finals for entry into the Stanley Cup finals.

All series in each round are played in best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Prince of Wales Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Campbell Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

In the case of games that remain a draw after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows . It ends with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
