Franz Belting

Franz Belting (born April 17, 1908 in Lehrte ; † June 26, 2010 in Hanover ) was a multiple award-winning German artist, designer , graphic artist , teacher and lecturer . The painter's and pen's techniques included watercolor and tempera , and later wax paint as well . The artist founded the Lehrte gallery by donating a collection of his own works.

Life

Franz Belting was born in Lehrte in 1908 during the late founding period of the German Empire . After attending school, however , the autodidact only went to Hanover during the Weimar Republic and in the year of the Great Depression in 1929, where he worked as a graphic designer in the König & Ebhardt printing company that same year .

At the time of National Socialism in 1938 Belting was the "Prize Winner of the Lower Saxony Art Competition ."

After the Second World War , Belting developed his characteristic style of painting in the mid-1950s, which then almost exclusively used wax paint. In 1959, the critic Friedrich Rasche described Belting's artistic signature in the daily newspaper Hannoversche Presse :

"A little surprise are the sheets by Franz Belting, painted with wax paint, in which, beyond the ornamental, a fantasy world of its own opens up, bright, full of mystery and delicate transparency."

Belting had already been elected first chairman of the Association of Visual Artists , Hannover Group (BBK Hannover) in 1957, a task that he carried out until 1968. In the meantime, he had already accepted a teaching position at the Werkkunstschule Hildesheim in 1958 , where he also worked full-time from 1967. Prior to that , from 1962 to 1965 - also in Hildesheim - he led a modern art seminar at the Hildesheim Adult Education Center.

From 1971 to 1976 Franz Belting worked as a lecturer in Gestalt theory at the Hildesheim-Holzminden University of Applied Sciences . During this time, in 1972, he took over the duties of the 2nd state chairman of Lower Saxony of the professional association of visual artists.

In 1984 Belting was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .

In 1988 Belting founded a permanent exhibition of this collection of 110 pictures from his complete oeuvre with a donation to his hometown Lehrte, with which he also established the gallery location Lehrte itself.

In 1994 Franz Belting was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Lower Saxony Order of Merit.

Since February 2006 the Franz Belting collection of the city of Lehrte has been located in the municipal gallery in the old locksmith's shop of the former Lehrter sugar factory at Alte Schlosserei 1 , next to the municipal gallery KUBUS of the Lower Saxony state capital, it is also the only other municipal gallery within the 21st century Region of Hanover encompassing municipalities .
