Petr Klíma (born December 23, 1964 in Chomutov , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League from 1985 to 1999 for the Detroit Red Wings , Edmonton Oilers , Tampa Bay Lightning , Los Angeles Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins .
Career
Petr Klíma began his career at CHZ Litvínov , for whom he played in the 1st league , the highest Czechoslovak ice hockey league , from 1981 to 1983 . He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1983 in the fifth round as a total of 86th player by the Detroit Red Wings . Initially, the attacker stayed two more years in his Czechoslovak homeland, where he won championship with the ASD Dukla Jihlava in 1984 and 1985 before he fled during a training camp for the national team in West Germany and received refugee status in the United States . In the 1985/86 season Klíma made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Red Wings, which gave him in November 1989 in a so-called "blockbuster transfer" to the Edmonton Oilers , with whom in the 1989/90 season straight away won the prestigious Stanley Cup . As part of the transfer deal, he moved to the Canadian metropolis with Joe Murphy , Adam Graves and Jeff Sharples , while Jimmy Carson , Kevin McClelland and a five-round draft law went to Detroit.
Before the 1993/94 season , the Czech was given to the Tampa Bay Lightning , for which he played for a total of three years until 1996. During the lockout in the 1994/95 NHL season , he was also in a game in the Czech Extra League for AC ZPS Zlín on the ice, and twelve times for EC Wolfsburg from the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga .
After his contract with Tampa, Klíma had a turbulent season in 1996/97 , during which he was under contract with the Los Angeles Kings , Pittsburgh Penguins , his ex-club Edmonton Oilers and the Cleveland Lumberjacks from the International Hockey League . Then Klíma moved for a year to the Krefeld Penguins from the German Ice Hockey League , before moving as a free agent to the Detroit Red Wings, which brought him into the NHL, in January 1999 . There he could no longer assert himself, so he paused with ice hockey for two years before he played again for his youth club HC Chemopetrol Litvínov from the extra league from 2001 to 2003 , where he finally ended his career.
International
For Czechoslovakia Klíma took part in the Junior World Championships in 1983 and 1984 , as well as the Junior European Championships in 1982 .
