Kevin Norton

Kevin Norton (born January 21, 1956 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American drummer , vibraphonist and composer of avant-garde jazz and free improvisation music .

Norton grew up in Staten Island and later studied composition at Hunter College , where he began working with bassist Milt Hinton . In 1986 he was supposed to record the album The Judge's Decision with Hinton with him . After completing his studies at Hunter College , he studied at the Manhattan School of Music and completed his Masters in Classical Percussion. He then played with musicians from the New York "downtown scene" and worked with Fred Frith's experimental rock band Keep the Dog , which at the time also included saxophonist John Zorn and harpist Zeena Parkins . During this time he also worked with Phillip Johnston's formation Big Trouble ( Flood at the Ant Farm ) and Joel Forrester .

Kevin Norton has been active in the New York avant-garde jazz and contemporary music scene since the 1980s. He has since worked with a variety of composers and musicians such as Anthony Braxton ( Four Compositions (Quartet) 1995 , Sextet (Istanbul) 1995 , Ensemble (New York) 1995 , Octet (New York) 1995 and Tentet (New York) 1996 ) the James Emery Septet ( Spectral Domains , 1997), as well as with Milt Hinton , Fred Frith, David Krakauer , Joëlle Léandre and Wilber Morris . In 1996 his album Integrated Variables was released on CIMP with drummer George Cartwright and bassist Mark Dresser . In 1998 he played in the ensemble of Chris Jonas with Cuong Vu , James Fei and Joe Fiedler ( Ensembles Unsynchronized ). In 1999 he founded his own record label Barking Hoop Recordings with a focus on new music such as Norton's own ensembles and Anthony Braxton, Kevin O'Neil, Billy Stein and the String Trio of New York . In 2000 he played in the Trio Viriditas with Alfred Harth and Wilber Morris.

Kevin Norton has also worked with Tony Malaby , Dave Ballou , John Lindberg , Connie Crothers , Tomas Ulrich , Steve Lehman , Joe Fonda , David Krakauer , David Bindman and JD Parran throughout his career . Kevin Norton has worked with numerous European improvised music artists such as Paul Rogers , Joëlle Léandre, Paul Dunmall and Frode Gjerstad . In 2002 Norton was composer in residence at MacDowell Colony . He has taught at various schools and universities, such as the University of Maryland and William Paterson University .
