Frode Gjerstad (born March 24, 1948 in Stavanger ) is a Norwegian alto saxophonist , flautist and clarinetist of free jazz and creative jazz .

Live and act

Gjerstad played in the 1980s with John Stevens and Johnny Dyani in the formation Detail , in which the pianist Eivin One Pedersen also initially participated. In 1985 he founded his large-format Circulasione Totale Orchestra in Stavanger, with which he recorded the album "Dancemble" in 1989 (and in which musicians such as Louis Moholo , Bobby Bradford and Sabir Mateen appeared in 2008 ). In 1998 the album "Borealis" was created. In addition, Gjerstad works with changing groups in the United States and Europe and has worked on record projects with musicians such as Peter Brötzmann , Evan Parker , Derek Bailey , Bjørn Kjellemyr , Terje Isungset and William Parker . With the drummer Paal Nilssen-Love and the bassist Øyvind Storesund he formed the Frode Gjerstad Trio in 1999, with whom he has recorded five albums so far. In 2011 he worked with his formation Circulasione Totale Orchestra ( PhilaOslo ).

In 2008 he was awarded the Buddy Prize, Norway's most important jazz prize.
