James Fei

James Cheng Ting Fei (pinyin: Fèi Zhèngtíng; * 1974 in Taipei , Taiwan ) is a Taiwanese American saxophonist and composer of contemporary music , electronic music and free improvisation music . He plays soprano , alto and baritone saxophone and bass clarinet .

Life

James Fei came to the United States in 1992 to study electrical engineering and also worked as a musician. Since 1998 he has been involved in several projects by Anthony Braxton ( Four Compositions , 1998 and Composition, No. 247 , 2000) and also performed with him at the North Sea Jazz Festival ; he also worked with the composer Alvin Lucier . In 1998 he played in the ensemble of Chris Jonas with Cuong Vu , Kevin Norton and Joe Fiedler ( Ensembles Unsynchronized ) .. Since the 1990s Fei has recorded several solo albums on the labels Leo Records , CRI, Organized Sound and Improvised Music (Japan) . With the album Bode Sound Project , he paid homage to an early pioneer of electronic music, Harald Bode . Further compositions by Fei were performed by the Bang on a Can All-Stars , the Orchestra of the SEM Ensemble and the Noord-Hollands Philharmonisch Orkest . In addition to his compositions for concert music and for electro-acoustic ensembles, Fei has created sound installations and performs as an improviser solo and in small groups, such as in the James Fei - Charity Chan - Damon Smith Trio Improvisation , but also with Chris Cutler , Anthony Coleman , Christian Wolff John Butcher , Jaap Blonk and Okkyung Lee .

Fei lives in the San Francisco Bay Area . Since 2006 he has been an assistant professor at Mills College , California, where he teaches electronic arts.
