The String Trio of New York is an American jazz trio that performs chamber jazz on the stringed instruments guitar, violin and double bass.

The polystylistic group, founded in 1977, initially served to perform both collective improvisations and the compositions of their founders. The jazz-based trio also touches on bluegrass and other musical traditions in which ensembles with a similar line-up are active. Over the years the ensemble has also performed cover versions of standards by Erik Satie , Fats Waller , Duke Ellington , John Lewis , Thelonious Monk , Charles Mingus , Charlie Parker , John Coltrane , Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones, and since 1991 they have also been specially commissioned Compositions on. The sound of the group is characterized by a specific swing and a melodic attitude. While the founding members James Emery and John Lindberg have remained loyal to the trio to this day, the violin position has been changed several times after Billy Bang left the trio. According to some critics, the strongest albums were made with the violinist Regina Carter ( Intermobility , 1992; Blues ...? , 1993). The trio has recorded several albums with a guest musician.
