The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1956 began on March 20, 1956 and ended on April 10, 1956 with the 4-1 success of the Canadiens de Montréal over the Detroit Red Wings . The Canadiens won their eighth title and played their sixth final in a row, while the Red Wings were in the final for the third time in a row. In the last two years Detroit had emerged victorious 4: 3 from this clash, with an identical final pairing in three consecutive seasons in NHL history is still unique (as of: Playoffs 2020). In addition, the Canadiens in the person of Jean Béliveau provided the top scorer and top scorer of these playoffs.
mode
The four best teams in the league qualified for the playoffs. In the semi-finals, the first and third as well as the second and fourth of the final table faced each other. The respective winners then contested the Stanley Cup final.
All series were held in best-of-seven mode , which means that a team needed four wins to advance. The higher seeded team had home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, the home law changed from game to game. The higher-ranked team had a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games.
Overtime followed for games that remained tied after 60 minutes of regular playing time . It ended with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
