The 1916-17 season was the eighth and final regular season of the National Hockey Association (NHA). The Canadiens de Montréal became champions . Subsequently, the league was replaced by the National Hockey League .
Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Toronto 228th Battalion was added to the league as an expansion team.
mode
In the regular season, the seven teams should complete two halves of the season with ten games per team and the winners of both halves of the season finally meet in a playoff final in two games, whereby the total goal ratio of these two games was decisive for the championship title. However, due to the withdrawal of the Toronto 228th Battalion and the Toronto Blueshirts after the first half of the season, the schedule had to be changed. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a tie and zero points for a defeat.
Season course
The inclusion of the Toronto 228th Battalion military team was controversial, however, the team, who played in jerseys similar to the uniforms used by the Canadian armed forces at that time during World War I , enjoyed great popularity with viewers. Following the first half of the season, which was won by the Canadiens de Montréal , the 228th Battalion was shipped from Toronto to the front in Europe . Since the other teams could not agree with the owner of the Toronto Blueshirts , Eddie Livingstone, about a common rest of the game plan , this also withdrew his team from the game with immediate effect. The second half of the season was won by the Ottawa Senators , who were defeated by the Canadiens de Montréal with 6: 7 goals in the playoffs. Due to the dispute with Livingstone, the National Hockey League was finally founded by the other team owners in November 1917 .
