The Seattle Metropolitans were an American ice hockey team based in Seattle , Washington . The team played in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA) from 1915 to 1924 .

history

The Seattle Metropolitans were founded in 1915 and included in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association for the 1915-16 season . In their first season, which was played with a total of four teams, the team managed to achieve a game record of nine wins and nine defeats. The championship was won by the Portland Rosebuds . In the following season, the team achieved 16 wins, lost eight games and thus won the PCHA championship for the first time. The Metropolitans then competed against the winner of the National Hockey Association , the Montreal Canadiens , to win the Stanley Cup .

In four games, the Seattle team won 3-1 and became the first team from the United States to win the Stanley Cup. The team's top scorers included Bernie Morris , Frank Foyston and Jim Riley . With the goalkeeper Hap Holmes and the two defenders Gord Fraser and Jack Arbor , the franchise also had a reputable defense. The Canadian Pete Muldoon acted as head coach . In 1918, 1920, 1922 and 1924 the championship of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association could be won four more times. The final games of the Stanley Cup in 1919 against the Montreal Canadiens were abandoned at a score of 2: 2 because several players on the Canadian team fell ill with the Spanish flu . The title was therefore not awarded.

In the following year, the team qualified again for the final games of the Stanley Cup and was only just defeated in five games with 2-3 wins against the Ottawa Senators . After the 1923/24 season, the franchise was dissolved and their home ground was demolished in favor of a parking garage.
