The Victoria Cougars were a professional ice hockey team based in Victoria , British Columbia . The team was founded in 1911 under the name Victoria Senators and after two years renamed Victoria Aristocrats . The Cougars are the last Stanley Cup winner outside of the National Hockey League .

history

The Victoria Senators team was founded in 1911 and played in the PCHA together with a team from Vancouver and New Westminster . As early as 1913, the team was renamed Victoria Aristocrats . The team immediately caused a stir under a new name. They wanted to compete against the reigning Stanley Cup winner, the Quebec Bulldogs and win the cup, but the series was not recognized as an official series. Among other things, there were different rules in the different leagues. Games one and three were played according to the rules of the PCHA with seven players and both times the Aristocrats were able to walk off the ice as winners. The Bulldogs were only successful in the second game, which was played under the rules of the National Hockey Association with only six players. Since the aristocrats' stadium was occupied by the Canadian military in 1916, they moved across the border into the United States to Spokane . There you played a year as Spokane Canaries before the team was disbanded.

As early as 1918, a new beginning was started as Victoria Aristocrats . In 1922 the team was renamed Victoria Cougars . In 1924 the PCHA was dissolved and the Cougars played from then on in the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL). Lester Patrick led the team and led it to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1925 . After the Hamilton Tigers hit the playoffs as the best team of the NHL season, the Montréal Canadiens came as representatives. In the local Patrick Arena, the Cougars won the series 3-1, making them the last team outside of the NHL to win the Stanley Cup. In addition, with the Anaheim Ducks, a team only managed to bring the cup to the west coast in the 2006/07 season . In the following season, the Cougars were able to qualify for the finals of the Stanley Cup. The opponents this time were the Montreal Maroons . The title was not defended in Montreal and they lost to the Maroons in four games with 1: 3. After the end of the season, the WCHL was also dissolved. The team was sold to Detroit and played there as the Detroit Cougars . This resulted in today's Detroit Red Wings .
