The 228th Battalion were a Canadian ice hockey team based in Toronto , Ontario . The team played in the National Hockey Association in the 1916-17 season .

history

Since many professional ice hockey players joined the Canadian armed forces after the outbreak of World War I , the National Hockey Association decided to take on a military team for the 1916/17 season and the choice fell on that of the 228th Battalion from Toronto , in which some ice hockey players did their military service. The season should be played in two halves with ten games each, but the 228th Battalion was shipped to the front after the first ten games in Europe , which is why the team could not end the game operations in the NHA and was dissolved. Since the owner of the Toronto Blueshirts , Eddie Livingstone, could not agree with the other teams on a common game plan for the rest of the season, he also withdrew his own team from the league and due to this conflict became the National Hockey League in November 1917 founded.
