Kenneth "Kenny" Mosdell (born July 13, 1922 in Montreal , Québec ; † January 5, 2006 ibid) was a Canadian ice hockey player who, in the course of his active career between 1937 and 1960, among other things, 773 games for the Brooklyn Americans , Canadiens de Montréal and Chicago Blackhawks in the National Hockey League on the position of the center has denied. Mosdell won the Stanley Cup four times during his 16 seasons in the NHL - all between 1946 and 1959 with the Canadiens de Montréal. In addition, the five-time All-Star was the last active player to play for the New York / Brooklyn Americans franchise . Likewise, until the great expansion of the NHL in 1967, Mosdell was the last player who had accrued for something other than the so-called " Original Six " franchises.

Career

Mosdell spent his junior years in his native Montreal , where he played for the Royal Montréal Hockey Club between 1939 and 1941 . With the junior team, the center forward ran mainly in the Ligue de hockey junior du Québec , the forerunner of the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . In 1941 he took part with the team in the Memorial Cup , where he led the team with 26 scorer points to the finals, where it was subject to the Winnipeg Rangers to Glen Harmon . During this time, the attacker also made his debut in the senior division, where he occasionally ran up for the men's team of the Royals in the Ligue de hockey senior du Québec .

The performance in the Memorial Cup finally drew the attention of the National Hockey League to the 19-year-old, and so the Brooklyn Americans secured the services of the free agent in October 1941 . Mosdell made his debut for the Americans at the beginning of the 1941/42 season and played 41 games for the franchise, which was in troubled waters . Due to the Second World War , Mosdell was drafted into the military in the summer of 1942 and served between 1942 and 1944 in the Royal Canadian Air Force , where he was stationed in Montreal and Lachine . During this time, he remained loyal to ice hockey - albeit not in the NHL - and played for the RCAF teams in the Ligue de hockey senior du Québec .

After completing his military service, the Canadian was given the chance to play in the NHL franchise of his native city, the Canadiens de Montréal , which had acquired his transfer rights in September 1943 from the Brooklyn Americans after they had stopped playing in 1942. At the beginning of the Canadiens the young player had a difficult breakthrough. Although he spent the entire 1944/45 season in the Montréals NHL squad, at the beginning of the following season he was loaned to the Buffalo Bisons from the American Hockey League together with Frank Eddolls and an unknown sum of money , while the bisons in return were loaned to Larry Thibeault awarded to the French Canadians. Nevertheless, Mosdell returned to the Canadiens during the season and contributed four goals and one template to win the cup of the same name during the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1946 . As a result, the striker was given a regular place in the Montréals squad, although he missed most of the 1947/48 season due to a knee injury in August 1947 in a softball game . Despite his defensive role, he received his first two invitations to the NHL All-Star Game in 1951 and 1952 . In total, he took part in five such games in the course of his career.

After being in the Stanley Cup Playoffs 1953 triumph with the Montreal Canadiens again in the final and had thus secured his second Cup win, Mosdells made offensive statistics with the start of the 1953/54 season - also due to the injury breaks of Elmer Lach  - a immense leap to the top. After 16 and 19 scorer points in the two previous years and a career record of 31 points to date - set up in the 1950/51 season  - the offensive player initially increased to 46 points, which he improved by eight points in the 1954/55 season . His versatile game earned him appointments to the NHL First and Second All-Star Team after the two years of play . At the end of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1956 , Mosdell won his third Stanley Cup with the Habs and was then given to the Chicago Black Hawks .

In one of numerous player sales from the Canadiens de Montréal to the Chicago Black Hawks in the early summer of 1956, Mosdell moved to the "Windy City" with Bud MacPherson for $ 30,000 . However, Montréal reserved the right to bring the players back if necessary. After a mixed season for the Canadian, in which he had only scored six points in 25 missions for Chicago, the Canadiens brought their "prodigal son" back to his hometown in September 1957. Since the now 35-year-old attacker no longer had the class of earlier years, he was only part of the NHL squad, but instead played again for his home club, the Royal Montréal Hockey Club. Mosdell, however, remained the property of the Canadiens and so came in the course of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1959 to his last three NHL appearances, which were rewarded with his fourth Stanley Cup triumph. In the 1959/60 season he let his career end with the Royals, who had now joined the Eastern Professional Hockey League after having been a member of the Ligue de hockey senior du Québec in previous years .

By the time he retired in the summer of 1960, Mosdell had been the last active player to play for the New York / Brooklyn Americans franchise in the National Hockey League. Likewise, until the great expansion of the NHL in 1967, he was the last player who had accrued for something other than the so-called " Original Six " franchises. Mosdell died in January 2006 at the age of 83 in his native Montreal. His health had steadily deteriorated three years earlier after a stroke .
