Elmer James Lach (born January 22, 1918 in Nokomis , Saskatchewan , † April 4, 2015 in Kirkland , Québec ) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played for the Montréal Canadiens in the National Hockey League from 1940 to 1954 .
Career
Lach was the playmaker of the legendary "Punch Line" of the Montréal Canadiens . Together with Maurice Richard and Toe Blake , they scored over 700 points in four and a half years. Above all, he had excellent defensive qualities, but his two years as a top scorer proved that he was also very dangerous up front. Also in the year in which the Art Ross Trophy was awarded for the first time , Lach led this ranking. In 1944, 1946 and 1953 he won the Stanley Cup three times .
In 1966 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame . His number was banned from the club on December 4, 2009, on the day of the Canadiens 100th birthday, before the game against the Boston Bruins , after a festive ceremony.
