Herbert Martin "Herb" Gardiner (born May 8, 1891 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ; † January 11, 1972 ) was a Canadian ice hockey player (defender) and coach who worked for the Montréal Canadiens and the Chicago Black Hawks in the 1926-1929 National Hockey League played.

Career

He began his professional career in 1921 with the Calgary Tigers in the Western Canada Hockey League . Together with Red Dutton he was in defense when the Tigers lost to the Montreal Canadiens in the final series of the Stanley Cup in 1924 .

After ice hockey was in crisis in the west, the Montréal Canadiens managed to move him to a move to eastern Canada for the 1926/27 season . He was also able to convince with strong performances in the NHL and was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as the most valuable player in the NHL . In the Canadiens he defended on the side of Sylvio Mantha .

For the 1928/29 season , the Canadiens loaned him to the Chicago Black Hawks , where he was active as a player-coach. For the playoffs, however, he was brought back to Montréal. After the end of the season he moved to the Boston Bruins , who made him to the Philadelphia Arrows in the Canadian-American Hockey League . There he only played occasionally and worked as a coach and manager. In 1936 he moved to the Philadelphia Ramblers in the American Hockey League . He led the team twice in the finals of the Calder Cup . His last coaching station was the Philadelphia Falcons in the Eastern Hockey League .

In 1958 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
