Career

As a player

Raised in a suburb of Montreal, Savard played his way into the books of the Scouts of the Canadiens' juniors. In the series of "Trois Denis" he played together with Denis Cry and Denis Tremblay, who both have their birthdays exactly on the same day as Denis Savard.

Behind Doug Wickenheiser and Dave Babych , he was elected third by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft , ahead of stars like Larry Murphy (4th), Paul Coffey (6th) and Mike Bullard (9th). And right next year he made the leap into the NHL. A good rookie season with 75 points was followed by 119 points in the 1981/82 season . In the years to come, Savard played with Al Secord and rookie Steve Larmer in one of the NHL's most effective assault lines. He exceeded the 100 point mark five times.

Before the 1990/91 season , Savard was given to the Canadiens de Montréal to strengthen the defensive with Chris Chelios . There, in his hometown, he won the Stanley Cup in 1993 . He could not be used in the decisive game. He moved to the Tampa Bay Lightning , but during his second season in Florida, he was brought back by the Blackhawks and ended his career there in 1997.

In the year after his career end's shirt number 18 was established in March 1998 by the Blackhawks locked and is therefore no longer awarded. In addition, he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2000 .

As a trainer

Already in the 1997/98 season Savard got a post as assistant coach with the Blackhawks. In late November 2006, Trent Yawney was sacked as Chicago's head coach. Savard then took over the post before he was replaced by Joel Quenneville in the middle of the 2008/09 season . He then retired from professional ice hockey.
