David Michael "Dave" Babych (born May 23, 1961 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player , coach and official who played 1309 games for the Winnipeg Jets , Hartford Whalers during his active career between 1977 and 2000 , Vancouver Canucks , Philadelphia Flyers and Los Angeles Kings played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Babych celebrated his greatest career success, who was selected as the overall runner-up in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft and twice participated in the NHL All-Star Game , in the jersey of the Canadian national team by winning the silver medal at the 1989 World Cup . His older brother Wayne was also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Dave Babych began his active career with the Fort Saskatchewan Traders in the Alberta Junior Hockey League , for which he was active in the 1977/78 season. He then joined the Portland Winter Hawks and went on the ice for their team in the top Canadian junior league Western Hockey League for the next three years . Babych, who had received positive attention because of his achievements and was awarded the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy as the best defender of the 1979/80 season , was selected in the first round of the 1980 NHL Entry Draft in second place by the Winnipeg Jets . For the 1980/81 season , the defensive player was immediately included in the NHL squad of the Jets. During his debut season, Babych completed 69 games for the Winnipeg Jets in the NHL and scored 44 points scorer . After the qualification for the play-offs was clearly missed, the team finished third in the Campbell Conference in the 1981/82 season and thus secured a place in the finals. In four games, however, the team lost in the first round against the St. Louis Blues and Babych spent 29 penalty minutes on the bench.

In the following three years, the defender managed to get into the play-offs with the Jets, but the team was defeated three times in a row against the Edmonton Oilers . During this time he was twice in the NHL All-Star Game for the Campbell Conference All-Stars team and scored one goal each in 1983 and 1984 . On November 25, 1985 he was given in an exchange deal with the Hartford Whalers , in return Ray Neufeld went to Winnipeg. In Hartford, too, the defensive player was always one of the regulars and qualified for the finals five times with the Whalers in six years. He fell out for almost the entire 1990/91 season for the game operation, since he had to undergo surgery after an injury to his wrist and as a result only completed eight games for the Whalers. Babych were selected by the Minnesota North Stars in the Expansion Draft on May 30, 1991 . On June 22, 1991 he was bartered to the Vancouver Canucks and Tom Kurver was sent to the North Stars as compensation . In the 1993/94 season he managed to move into the finals of the Stanley Cup with the Canucks and lost the series against the New York Rangers in just under seven games.

In the following seasons he could not build on this success with the team and failed to qualify for the finals three times in a row. On March 24, 1998, the Canucks gave him in exchange for a draft pick to the Philadelphia Flyers . There Babych was not a regular player for the first time in his active career and scored comparatively few points. After spending a year in Philadelphia, the next barter followed. He was submitted along with a five-round suffrage to the Los Angeles Kings and in return Steve Duchesne was sent to the Flyers. After he had completed eight games for the Kings and scored two points, his contract was not renewed at the end of the season. Babych remained a free agent until January 2000 and then signed with HC Ambrì-Piotta as a playing assistant coach. The defender ran in three games for the club in the National League A on the ice and ended his active career at the end of the season.

After a break of several years, he returned behind the gang for the 2008 Deutschland Cup as assistant coach for the Canadian national team . Between 2009 and 2014, Babych was employed as a consultant for his ex-team Vancouver Canucks.

International

Babych took part in the 1981 and 1989 World Championships with the Canadian national team. His greatest success was winning the silver medal at the 1989 World Cup.
