Hubert Jacques "Pit" Martin (born December 9, 1943 in Rouyn-Noranda , Québec ; † November 30, 2008 near Rouyn-Noranda, Québec) was a Canadian ice hockey player who played for the Detroit Red Wings , Boston Bruins , from 1961 to 1979 Chicago Black Hawks and Vancouver Canucks played in the National Hockey League .
Career
Martin played with Lowell MacDonald and Paul Henderson on the Hamilton Red Wings team during his junior years . Together they won the Memorial Cup in 1962 . In the 1961/62 season he came with the Detroit Red Wings to his first NHL mission, in which he prepared a goal. After another year in Hamilton, he commuted between Detroit and the Pittsburgh Hornets in the American Hockey League until the 1965/66 season .
A day before the end of 1965 he moved to the Boston Bruins , where he was able to earn a regular place. In May 1967, it became part of one of the most one-sided barter deals in NHL history. The Bruins sent him along with Gilles Marotte to the Chicago Black Hawks , who in return received three outstanding players and future stars: Phil Esposito , Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield .
He was one of the smaller players in the NHL and made up for this deficit with will and dedication. With the Black Hawks he was an integral part of the team for over ten years. He was nominated four times for an NHL All-Star Game and was awarded the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy in 1970. He was also the team captain there for a number of years . At the age of 33 he switched again. He played with the Vancouver Canucks for a year and a half before ending his career.
On November 30, 2008, Martin had an accident when he wanted to leave his house on an island in the frozen Lake Kanasuta with a snowmobile . During the journey to the mainland, the ice collapsed under the weight of the vehicle. His body was recovered from the lake on December 2, 2008 by divers.
