Timothy E. Kerr (born January 5, 1960 in Windsor , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player (right winger) and current official. From 1980 to 1993 he played for the Philadelphia Flyers , New York Rangers and Hartford Whalers in the National Hockey League .

Career

Raised near Windsor , Ontario , he played as a junior in the OHA , initially for the Windsor Spitfires and later for the Kingston Canadians . In the junior league he had a reputation for being a stocky player who was not particularly quick on ice skates. He often positioned himself in front of the opposing goal and speculated on dust goals.

No team had chosen him in the draft and so the Philadelphia Flyers brought him as a free agent at the end of his last season as a junior . The Flyers sent him to their AHL farm team to the Maine Mariners for seven games . Six points were a very good result here.

After an average performance in training camp for the 1980/81 season , no one in Philadelphia believed that Kerr could make the jump to the NHL, but an injury to Ken Linseman tore a gap in the center position with the Flyers and Kerr took the opportunity. In his first two seasons he scored more than 20 goals. After a good start to the 1982/83 season with 11 goals after 24 games, he injured his knee so badly that the season was over for him.

In the coming season he was able to immediately build on his good form before the injury. In a row with Brian Propp and Dave Poulin , he earned the nickname "Sultan of Slot" and scored over 50 goals. He surpassed this mark in the next three years. In three of these four years he was the top scorer of the Flyers, Brian Propp was only able to beat him once. As he was a junior, he positioned himself in front of the goalkeeper and scored almost at will. During this time, the Flyers reached the finals of the Stanley Cup twice . In 1987, however, Kerr prevented a shoulder injury from participating in the finals. In Philadelphia, many believed that Kerr would have prevented the loss in seven games. The injury resulted in numerous surgeries and Kerr will only return to the ice shortly before the end of the coming season.

With 48 goals in the 1988/89 season , he celebrated an impressive comeback and was awarded the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for this. In 1990 he suffered a stroke of fate when his wife died ten days after giving birth to their child. In the years that followed, injuries forced Kerr to step back. In the 1991 NHL Expansion Draft , the San Jose Sharks selected him , but they gave him up after the New York Rangers .

In New York he only played 32 games. Also in his last season 1992/93 , in which he wore the jersey of the Hartford Whalers , he only went on the ice in 22 games.

After his active career, he started a real estate company. Since 2009 he is the owner of the Pensacola Ice Flyers from the Southern Professional Hockey League .
