Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy
The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is an ice hockey trophy awarded annually by the National Hockey League to the NHL player who shows perseverance, dedication and fairness in and for ice hockey.
The winner will be determined through a survey by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association . However, in contrast to the other trophies, the award can only be given once to the same player. The selection process also differs. Instead of the usual three players who can be chosen, there is one per team, i.e. 31 candidates, to choose from when choosing the Masterton Trophy winner.
The trophy was named after the late William Masterton , a Minnesota North Stars player . William Masterton died on January 15, 1968 of an injury sustained during a game.
The trophy was first awarded in 1968.
