He also ran in the NHL for the Boston Bruins , who had selected him in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft in fifth position, and the Toronto Maple Leafs . With the US national team , he won the silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics .
Career
Beginnings in youth and college
Phil Kessel began his career in 2002 with the Madison Capitols in the junior Central State Hockey League. In 2003 he moved into the development program of the US National Team . Within two years he scored 88 goals, more than any other player in the program. At the U18 Junior World Championship in 2004 he won the silver medal, the following year he became U18 Junior World Champion with the US team .
From the summer of 2005 he went to the University of Minnesota , where he played for their ice hockey team and there, too, he was able to convince with a good number of points and was named Rookie of the Year in the WCHA division at the end of the season . In the 2006 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the Boston Bruins in the first round in fifth place. During the 2005/06 season he was even number one in the draft rankings for the North American outfield players, but slipped to third place and ended up in fifth place shortly before the draft.
Boston Bruins (2006-2009)
On August 17, 2006, the Boston Bruins announced that they had signed a long-term contract with Phil Kessel and that he would earn $ 850,000 a year, the maximum salary a new professional can receive. In his second NHL game on October 7, 2006, Kessel managed his first assist. Two weeks later, his first goal in the NHL followed against the Buffalo Sabers . On December 11th, 2006, his family announced that he was hospitalized. In the following days it became known that Kessel was suffering from testicular cancer . At a press conference on December 16, 2006, he announced that he had had a successful operation and that the tumor had been removed. The Bruins team doctor said the cancer was detected in a timely manner and had not yet spread. On January 6, 2007 he made his comeback with the Boston farm team , the Providence Bruins in the AHL, and the next day he scored his first goal for Providence. He played his first NHL game after being diagnosed with cancer on January 9 and ended the season with eleven goals and 18 assists . At the end of the season he received the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy , which is given to the player who is characterized by perseverance, dedication and fairness in and for ice hockey. He also took part with the US national team in the 2007 World Cup and was the third best scorer on his team.
In his second season, although Kessel improved his points, he did not achieve the progress hoped for by the Bruins. He performed well with 37 points, but it wasn't until the playoffs that he demonstrated his skills as a goalscorer with three goals in four games. He was able to build on this a little later at the 2008 World Cup and with ten points in seven games was together with Patrick Kane the top scorer of the US team, which, as in the previous year, was eliminated in the quarter-finals.
In the 2008/09 season , Kessel finally achieved his breakthrough and he developed into a leading player for the Boston Bruins. In the period from mid-November to just before Christmas, he succeeded in a series of 18 games in which he scored at least one point and in that time he had 14 goals and 14 assists.
Toronto Maple Leafs (2009-2015)
As part of the NHL Entry Draft 2009 , the Toronto Maple Leafs planned to buy him in exchange for Tomáš Kaberle , but the barter with the Boston Bruins did not materialize. In September 2009, both franchises agreed on a transfer that brought Kessel to Toronto. As compensation, the Bruins received a first-round and second-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2010 and a first-round vote for the NHL Entry Draft 2011 from the Leafs. With these voting rights, the Boston Bruins secured the rights to Tyler Seguin , Jared Knight and Dougie Hamilton . Immediately after the barter, Kessel signed a new five-year contract with the Leafs for a total of around $ 27 million. In early November 2011 he was the first Leafs player in 18 years ( Félix Potvin in October 1993) to be honored as NHL player of the month . After Kessel missed the start of the season due to an injury-related shoulder surgery, he made his debut for Toronto in November 2009 in the 2-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning . Four days later he scored his first goal for the Maple Leafs in the game against the Detroit Red Wings .
Following the NHL Winter Classic 2010 , Kessel's nomination for the 2010 Winter Olympics was announced. There he was able to mark a goal as well as an assist and won the silver medal with Team USA . At the beginning of the 2011/12 season , the American was able to achieve his first hat-trick in the Maple Leafs jersey and ended October as the top scorer of the NHL. Kessel took part in the NHL All-Star Game again within the season . In February 2012, the right-handed shooter scored the 300th scorer point of his career and his 30th goal of the season, a mark that he reached for the fourth time in a row. With a total of 82 scorer points, the season should be the strongest offensive of his career so far.
In the following season , Kessel could not build on the performance from the previous year and could not achieve a goal in ten consecutive games before he scored the decisive goal in the game against the Winnipeg Jets in February 2013 . In the final phase of the season, the attacker's offensive performance increased, so that after the main round, Kessel became the team-internal top scorer of the Maple Leafs and landed in 7th place in the league. In October 2013, the American signed an eight-year contract extension with a rumored annual salary of eight million US dollars. In the early stages of the 2013/14 season , Kessel was able to score a goal for Toronto in three consecutive games, including the fourth hat-trick of his professional career in a 4-2 win against the Anaheim Ducks . This was followed by another hat trick in February 2014, with which he also scored his 30th goal of the season and thus completed a season with at least 30 goals for the fifth time in a row.
At the 2014 Winter Olympics , he was also successful three times in one game for Team USA against Slovenia . In total, he scored eight points at the tournament, making him the top scorer of all teams and receiving the award as the best striker.
Pittsburgh and Arizona (since 2015)
In July 2015, Kessel along with Tim Erixon , Tyler Biggs and a second-round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft was given to the Pittsburgh Penguins . The Maple Leafs received in return Kasperi Kapanen , Nick Spaling , Scott Harrington and a first- and a third-round vote for the same draft. In his first year with the Penguins, Kessel won the Stanley Cup and became the team's best playoff scorer with 22 points in 24 games. After winning the title, the attacker and the team could repeat it the following year. In the 2017/18 season he achieved his best offensive statistics to date with 92 points from 82 games, but missed the third Stanley Cup in a row with the team.
In June 2019, the Penguins including Dane Birks and a four-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft 2021 gave him to the Arizona Coyotes . In return, Alex Galchenyuk and young defender Pierre-Olivier Joseph moved to Pittsburgh. Shortly after the start of the following 2019/20 season, Kessel played his 1,000th game of the regular season in the NHL.
