Jakob Chychrun (born March 31, 1998 in Boca Raton , Florida ) is an American - Canadian ice hockey player of Ukrainian origin who has been playing the defender of the Arizona Coyotes in the National Hockey League since October 2016 . His father Jeff Chychrun and his uncle Luke Richardson were also active as professional ice hockey players in the NHL.

Career

Chychrun learned to play ice hockey in the US state of Florida and was later active in Detroit , Michigan . In 2013, the 15-year-old was selected in the draft of the United States Hockey League , but did not receive the special license required for his age, so he moved to Toronto and spent a year there with the youth team of the Toronto Junior Canadiens. The following summer he was selected in the OHL Priority Selection in first overall position by the Sarnia Sting from the Ontario Hockey League , which he joined at the beginning of the 2014/15 season. There the defender had an outstanding rookie year and was in the final selection for the Emms Family Award as well as the Max Kaminsky Trophy and the Red Tilson Trophy . He was also appointed to two selection teams. In the season 2015/16 Chychrun confirmed his achievements and was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2016 in 16th place by the Arizona Coyotes from the National Hockey League .

On July 30, 2016, the defender signed a three-year NHL entry contract with the Coyotes. Thanks to his good performance in the pre-season training camp, he earned a place in Arizona's squad at the beginning of the 2016/17 season and finally celebrated his competitive debut on October 15, 2016. As a result, he established himself in the Coyotes roster and finally signed a new six-year contract in Arizona in November 2018, which should bring him an average annual salary of 4.6 million US dollars from the start of the 2019/20 season.

International

For his home country Canada, Chychrun played at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2014 and the U18 Junior World Championship in 2016 . In both tournaments he was able to record four scorer points. He could not win a medal in either competition.
