Carl Söderberg (born October 12, 1985 in Malmö ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Arizona Coyotes from the National Hockey League since June 2019 and plays there on the position of the center . With the Swedish national team , he won the gold medal at the 2017 World Cup .
Career
After Söderberg played for various youth teams of the Malmö Redhawks in various junior leagues between 2000 and 2004 , he was also used a few times with the professional team in the Elitserien from the 2004/05 season . After a short loan to the second division club Mörrums GoIS IK , the attacker was able to establish himself with the Redhawks .
In the summer of 2006 he was signed by the St. Louis Blues from the National Hockey League , which had previously secured the transfer rights to Sweden as part of the 2004 NHL Draft . The Blues initially loaned him to his hometown club Malmö for a year before he was transferred to the Boston Bruins in July 2007 in exchange for Hannu Toivonen . These lent the left-handed shooter again to Malmö, where he finally signed a contract for three years in October 2008. After Malmö played in the Allsvenskan from the 2007/08 season due to a sporting relegation , Söderberg moved to the Linköpings HC in the Elitserien in the 2011/12 season.
In April 2013 Söderberg was finally signed by the Bruins and equipped with a contract until the end of the 2015/16 season. In Boston, the center was able to establish itself in the NHL team straight away and has had a regular seat since the 2013/14 season.
In June 2015, the Swede moved to the Colorado Avalanche , with the Bruins receiving a six- round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft . The Swede then signed a five-year contract there. Ultimately, Söderberg spent four seasons with the Avalanche and showed very different performances. In the 2015/16 season , for example, he set a personal record with 51 scorer points, which he followed by just 14 points the following year. In June 2019, Söderberg was given to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Kevin Connauton and a third-round vote in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft .
International
He played his first major tournament with the Swedish national team in September 2016 when he finished third with the team at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey . This was followed by winning the gold medal at the 2017 World Cup .
