Kevin Connauton (* 23. February 1990 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who since June 2019 at the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League is under contract and in parallel for their farm team, the Colorado Eagles , in the American Hockey League on the position of the defender plays. Connauton was previously active in the league for the Dallas Stars , Columbus Blue Jackets and Arizona Coyotes .

Career

Connauton began his career in the regional youth leagues of the province of Alberta and played in the 2007/08 season for the Spruce Grove Saints in the Alberta Junior Hockey League before he moved to the American Western Michigan University and for the local ice hockey team in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association played. In the NHL Entry Draft 2009 Connauton was selected in the third round in a total of 83rd place by the Vancouver Canucks after remaining unselected the previous year.

At Canucks efforts, the defender moved back to Canada for the 2009/10 season , to the Vancouver Giants from the Western Hockey League . In his debut season he made his breakthrough with 72 points from 69 games, when he finished the season as the best points defender and most successful rookie in the league. Connauton was then elected to the All-Star Team of the Western Conference and the All-Rookie Team of the Canadian Hockey League . With 72 points and 24 goals in one season, he also set franchise records for a defender of the Giants.

In April 2010 Connauton signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Canucks and initially played for their farm team, the Manitoba Moose , in the American Hockey League . After one season, the Canucks changed their cooperation partner in the AHL, so that Connauton ran up for the Chicago Wolves in the following two seasons . In the 2011/12 season , the defender was invited to the AHL All-Star Classic , where he won the Hardest Shot Contest with a measured speed of 99.4 mph (160 km / h) .

After three seasons in the organization of the Canucks, Kevin Connauton was transferred to the Dallas Stars together with a second-round vote for the 2013 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Derek Roy . They extended his contract by three years after the end of the season. At the beginning of the 2013/14 season , the defender made the leap into the NHL roster of stars, so he made his debut in the National Hockey League on October 24, 2013 in the game against the Calgary Flames . After he was then ordered back into the AHL for a short time, Connauton established himself in the line-up of the stars from December 2013 and closed his debut season with seven points from 36 missions. After eight games in the 2014/15 season , he was put on the waiver list, where the Columbus Blue Jackets selected him. In 54 games for the Blue Jackets, the defender scored nine goals and prepared ten.

After Connauton initially played 27 games for the Blue Jackets in the 2015/16 season , he was put on the Wavier list again in January 2016 and then signed by the Arizona Coyotes . There the defender finally found a sporting home for the following three and a half years before he was given to the Colorado Avalanche in June 2019 in exchange for the Swede Carl Söderberg . Colorado also received a third-round vote in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft .
