Hannu Toivonen (born May 18, 1984 in Kalvola ) is a Finnish ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Odense Bulldogs in the Danish Metal Ligaen since February 2018 . He was selected in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft in 29th position in the first round by the Boston Bruins and plays in the butterfly style.
Career
Toivonen started his career in the Finnish A-Junior League at HPK Hämeenlinna , where he was used in 31 games. In 2002 he took part in the U20 World Junior Championship and won a bronze medal with Finland .
In the 2002 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the first round at position 29 by the Boston Bruins . His success at the World Cup brought him to the SM-liiga in the 2002/03 season, where he played 24 games for HPK. He was undefeated in 13 consecutive games. For the 2003/04 season he finally moved to the North American American Hockey League for the Providence Bruins , the farm team of the Boston Bruins, for which he played 36 games.
In the following season, the Finn prevailed as a regular goalkeeper for the Providence Bruins. However, that season he suffered a knee injury that required surgery. Toivonen missed 13 games. Then he managed with the Providence Bruins to move into the play-offs , in which the team reached the Conference Finals.
The 2005/06 season brought her entry into the NHL. After an injury to Boston's Andrew Raycroft , Toivonen was appointed substitute goalkeeper behind Tim Thomas . On October 8, 2005, he completed his first NHL game against the Pittsburgh Penguins and won his first NHL victory. Toivonen had to allow the first goal in the NHL career of Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby . On December 1, 2005, he succeeded in a game against the Ottawa Senators, his first NHL shutout . In June 2006, the Bruins separated from Raycroft and Toivonen competed with Thomas for the place as a regular goalkeeper, but failed to make the breakthrough and was sent to the Providence Bruins in the AHL during the 2006/07 season .
In July 2007, the Boston Bruins transferred him to the St. Louis Blues . There his contract, which expired at the end of the 2007/08 season, was not extended. Toivonen then returned to Finland and signed a contract with Ilves in the top Finnish league, the SM-liiga . The 2009/10 season he began again in the farm team of the St. Louis Blues, the Peoria Rivermen in the AHL, before he was given up on March 1, 2010 together with defender Danny Richmond for goalkeeper Joe Fallon to the Chicago Blackhawks . In Chicago Toivonen was behind his compatriot Antti Niemi , the French goalkeeper Cristobal Huet and the talented Corey Crawford, initially number four among the finalists and shared the goalkeeping position with Crawford on the farm team in Rockford . While Crawford prevailed in the NHL squad of the Blackhawks in the 2010/11 season, Toivonen formed a goalkeeping duo with Alec Richards at the Rockford IceHogs.
On July 1, 2011 Toivonen received a contract for two seasons with the Malmö Redhawks from the HockeyAllsvenskan . At the end of the 2011/12 season, Toivonen left the club because of financial problems and paid off his current contract.
In November 2013 he was signed by the Toledo Walleye from the ECHL .
Toivonen returned to Finland in April 2014 and was signed by the Liiga promoted Vaasan Sport . There he showed very good performances and moved to Ilves Tampere after his contract expired within the Liiga. In the 2017 play-offs, he lost the role of Ilves' first goalkeeper to Antti Lehtonen and therefore did not receive a contract extension after the end of the season. In May 2017 he was signed by the EC Graz 99ers from the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga .
